Hello all,

Was wondering if exercises at there target heart rate. If anyone does how do you go about calculating your THR. Also at what level do you exercise at. Below is how I calculate mine.

This is what I found :

Hirofumi Tanaka, Kevin Monahan, and Douglas Seals have probably never met President Bush, but the Colorado scientists did review 351 publications that reported the results of exercise tests on 18,712 men and women of all ages. They found that the old formula overestimates the actual maximum heart rate in young adults but underestimates it in people over 45. Based on their meta-analysis of earlier studies, the researchers devised a new formula, then validated it by testing it on 514 men and women between 18 and 81. Although the new formula involves a bit more math than the original equation, it appears to be more accurate: maximum heart rate = 208 – (0.7 x age in years).

208 - ( 0.7 x 51)

208 - 35.7 = 172.3

I set my THR at 75% and 85%        130 - 145

I walk three 14 minute miles at an average of 140 which is 83%.

Does anyone else train at these levels ?

It's important to remember that these formulas offer estimates, so they won't always be exact.  Many people find that the heart rate zones calculated in these formulas are often under-estimated.  I have a step-by-step article about finding target heart rate as well as info about how to adjust the numbers you get to fit your fitness level and goals:  Find Your Target Heart Rate.  That may help you get more detailed information.

Thanks Paige !

I did the calculation for my THR and this is what I came up with. Does that look ok ?

Age      RHR    Min THR   Max THR
         51        65        117    152.55

One more time Paige !

I also read in the article that you should train in a range of 75 to 85%. I'm a little confused because when I walk I have a Heart monitor on all the time. When I'm walking I pick up my speed until I feel like I'm getting a workout. My breathing actually feels normal and I'm having to inhale through my nose and exhale through my mouth. I having to force myself to breath hard and my heart rate runs around 140 to 143 and my the calculations I should not go over 130 BPM.

Again with the calculation 85% om my Max THR is 130.

My exercise today was to walk 3 miles in 40 minutes 49 seconds. My polar heart monitor says I burned 574 calories and 35% fat. My max HR was 149 and my average was 141. During my walk I stayed in My THR zone for 36 minutes 26 seconds. My THR zone is 130 to 145 BPM.

As I mentioned, those formulas are just estimates.  If you don't have any heart problems, are not on any medication that would affect heart rate or if you haven't been told by your doctor to keep your heart rate at a certain level, there's no reason you can't adjust your target heart rate zone to fit your perceived exertion (how you feel when you're exercising).  If 130 feels too easy, you may want to adjust your numbers to what works for you.
